Variants of labyrinths

We start with the ancient labyrinths. What are they? A labyrinth is a complex, intricate, and unique construction with a dead end, which is surrounded by the stone walls. People just imagine such kinds of labyrinths. The most ancient labyrinths were just the way as we have described. They have a path full of turns and twists leading from the entrance to the center of the construction. The archeologists of the north-western Spain have found the earthen tablets depicting labyrinths. They were discovered in Hellenic city of Pylos. Their age is about 3000 years. The classic variant of a labyrinth has seven concentric lines compactly intorted nucleus centralis. The entrance is only one. The ancient labyrinth had a long way, which one could pass moving to the center. The paths were not intercrossed and nobody could come in contact close to each other. If one wanted to go through the labyrinth, he/she could find out the way out only though the entrance because labyrinth did not have additional entrances. Therefore, one had to walk up the path, which led to the center. Of course, if one came across with Minotaur, there was no way out.

Another variant the ancient labyrinths are a maze. It consists of the intricate figures they seems to be symbols. They have some pathways to the goal, two or more entrances and they are open. The pathways join together and form a fork. If one wants to try the maze, he/she has to choose the right entrance, to guess where the direction to fork can be and to go to the center. It’s quite difficult. The ancient labyrinth could have square or orthographical forms or outlines.

Others variants of labyrinths are famous as the Palace of Knossos in Crete. As legend says, it was built by the Athenian architect Daedalus by the order of King Minos 3000 years ago. It had an underground system of tunnels, led into the home of a monstrous man bull that is called Minotaur. There are different symbols of a labyrinth but in one of them Pan was living. This idea was shown in the movie seen by my friend and me - ‘’Pan’s labyrinth’’.
